And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” – Genesis 1:28

Blessed at Creation and sent forward with a mandate to be fruitful and multiply. What a beginning for a species! Set apart as the image bearers of God Almighty, sent to represent His character, and spread the glory of His Name in our very creature. Given thriving favor and blessing, with every provision, not lacking anything.

To know that mankind was blessed by God is enough to stop and ponder for hours about. God, with all future knowledge of how man would one day and every day after choose to sin instead of trust and obey. To know that He would be dishonoured and disowned by these very image bearers, the ones created to reflect Him. God knew that instead of worshiping Him as creator, mankind would worship the created. What an incredible love declaration poured out here on man.

That great love of God one day, as He knew in this moment, would consummate at the cross. Taking all our personal sin and shame, and declaring again this blessings and love over it. He in this moment was redeeming for Himself the image bearers He created in Genesis. The only way to make human beings properly reflect Him again was to make them new and fill them with His “breath” [Spirit] again.

Once God redeems a persons life, the mandate stands afresh. To be fruitful, and multiply. Only this time, it not only means to populate the earth with more bodies. God wants our fruit to have eternal value. He desires that we multiply His redeemed image bearers. Jesus gave us the Great Commission (Matt 28:19 ) which is a resounding of this same commission in Genesis.

The Great Commission is all about multiplying His family. Genesis says to “fill the earth”, if we simply think of this as having children, we will never get there. But in the Commission of Jesus, when we see it in greater light with further revelation we know that this is a way we can fill the earth when we multiply. As we share the Gospel, and see God transform lives, we enable people to be sent to every corner of this planet to continue the work we are created for as image bearers, to make more image bearers.

This is what we were made for. We not only were made to worship Him as a blessed and unique part of His creation, we were made for multiplying His redeemed image in man, to the ends of the earth. This is the plan He called “very good.”
