There have been throughout history many people try to suggest that Christ’s death on the Cross was a payment to satan, as the Bible describes it as a ransom or a payment. The struggle many have had is that the bible doesn’t say whom the ransom is to, instead it focuses on whom was ransomed, and what that means for the many who will accept that price paid.
For the devil, this day meant defeat. Not that he had defeated Jesus or received any payment for the freedom of anyone. But that Jesus had defeated him. Hebrews says ” that through death He might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil” (Hebrews 2:14)
Death and sin no longer had the power, Christ, while making a payment on our behalf, destroyed the devil and his power for all who choose.
We see that Paul to the Ephesians says that it was an offering to God. It wasn’t a price paid to satan. Yes there was a price for our release, but the price was Christ and it was to pay for the sin committed against God. It was us, the guilty who made it necessary that Christ would willing give His own life for the sake of ours.
Celebrate that defeat today, as you celebrate and remember the death.
