[gn_quote style=”1″]”But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap.  For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth. But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.” – Luke 21:34-36[/gn_quote]

What cares and concerns are we carrying around with us each day, that, in the big picture of things don’t really matter? Everyone has the things they worry about, and have consume their thoughts. It may be: work, exams, relationships, health, fame, reputation etc.

This passage suggests and says it quite plainly, these things are weighing us down. What should our response be? “Pray to escape!” The reason prayer is needed in this escape is that the strength and focus of mind required to do so cannot come from us. We are human, we focus on these things because we have an earthly perspective and can’t really see the full picture. What we need to do is consult the One who can see the bigger picture and who has the strength to lift these concerns from our soul, when we are so unable.

When we lift our burdens to God, and pray for the strength to escape them, we may still think of them, and figure them all out. But, we can do so in the proper frame of mind and soul. When we are not weighed down with it, thinking that we are in control of the universe, we are then able to breathe, step back and evaluate and realize God is in control. Once we are able to do that, then we can focus on the big picture. The thing that matters most; Eternity, and how all our concerns relate to it.

Our focus shifts, from us, to Him. From my control, to His control. From my weakness to His strength. From my kingdom to His!

That is the whole purpose of this escaping. It is not to escape a simple worry, or stress. It is to escape the human inclination to promote our kingdom, fame and glory instead of His. He wants us to be ready to stand before the Son of Man, but we won’t be ready if we are too busy trying to get our kingdom and things sorted out here. Its a call to re-evaluate, to be awake to the things that matter most. His return, and His current mission.

Be awake, be strengthened, be ready for His coming, and prepare for His Kingdom. This can all be done in our work, exams, relationships, and health. Only if we give it all to Him, and ask Him to be our strength and our desire.
